Modern Warfare 3 Leak Results in Big Numbers for Activision

On May 13th, video game news blog Kotaku blew the lid off of what will perhaps be the biggest selling game of the year. Through an undisclosed source somewhere within the development of Modern Warfare 3, Kotaku obtained an enormous amount of information regarding the unannounced title including assets, multiplayer information, and plot spoilers. The leak should have been devastating to Activision, but the publishing powerhouse embraced the well of information being gradually fissured out into the public space. They released a number of trailers, confirming the game’s existence rather than denying it or simply going on the defensive.
The result has been tremendous; there’s more hype out there for Modern Warfare 3 now than there ever was for any game in the series before it. In a company-wide internal email obtained by Giant Bomb news writer Patrick Klepek, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg briefly touches upon the company’s investigation into the source of the leak, stating how seriously they regard any compromise to their intellectual property, and ensuring employees that they are “confident [the investigation] will be resolved quickly...
